“It’s like you’re screaming and no one can hear. You almost feel ashamed that someone could be that important, that without them you feel like nothing. No one will ever understand how much it hurts. You feel hopeless, like nothing can save you. And when it’s over and it’s gone, you almost wish that you could have all that bad stuff back, so that you could have the good.”
This video goes far beyond the typical surface-level pop video fodder and into a place that’s dark and uncomfortable: it perfectly captures the love-as-drug trope, both the freedom and fun as well as the danger and destructiveness. And perhaps what’s most remarkable about this video is that it doesn’t feel like a performance; I watch it and it puts a knot in my stomach because I feel more like an observer of an undeniable and tragic reality than of a contrived fiction. Rihanna is a surprisingly good actress. And on a lighter note, my favorite part of the video is when she vomits streamers… that’s a nice touch.
