“A Postcard to Nina” is one of my favorite songs of all time. The original recording is a little more peppy, but I really like this stripped down live version and have been listening to it a lot lately. I have such a deep appreciation for Jens Lekman’s cleverness and sense of humor in his songs, and I find this song especially hilarious because it’s about a situation that Jens experienced in real life in which he had to meet his friend Nina’s father and pretend to be her boyfriend so that he wouldn’t find out that she was travelling to San Francisco with her girlfriend. As humorous as the song is, it’s also a really touching portrait of friendship and the lengths one will go to for love, even if it isn’t a love of their own. My favorite part is toward the end when he sends Nina a postcard that says “Don’t let anyone stand in your way.” It’s so affirming. I would very much like to have a friend like Jens.
