Finally, Snow.

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App

Seattle experienced a Snowpocalypse a couple weeks ago, and after seeing all of my friends from home post seemingly endless photos of the buckets of snow and all the fun they were having playing in it, I’m not ashamed to admit that I was experiencing some snow-envy. Snow is such a rare occurrence in Seattle, so to miss out on it, especially when there was not a snowflake in sight here in Holland, was more than enough to put me in a sour mood.

Until today! It began snowing sometime around 8:30am, very lightly, and all morning I watched it snow more and more intensely out my window. By noon, the sidewalks and streets were completely white and Junior Mint-sized clumps of snow were falling steadily from the heavens.

I took a two-minute jaunt to the grocery store and it was like walking through a low-grade blizzard, flakes swirling all around, getting caught in my eyelashes and forming nice little piles on my shoulders and the top of my hat. I haven’t seen snow like this in quite a while, and I discovered today that in this context, absence makes the heart forget how magical snow is. It’s one of the lovelier meteorological phenomena, and I’m glad that I experience it so seldom that I continue to be enchanted by it whenever I do experience it.

But now that I’ve shaken all of the snow off me, I’m going to curl up under a blanket next to the heater with a cup of tea and watch a couple episodes of Twin Peaks. The lazy weekend is starting early. Happy Friday, peeps!

  1. Great shots! It snowed here in Vancouver three weeks or so ago and I wasn’t able to capture any of it 😦

  2. I love this post!! I’ve missed snow so much this winter and your pictures are great!! Wish we had some too… 🙂

  3. Thanks for the pics and story. Meanwhile, we in Cincinnati haven’t seen much snow this winter. Well, now that I’ve said that, I imagine something is on our horizon.

PS: I’ve enjoyed Seattle on my visits!

  4. Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed – very cool! I browsed through some of your other posts and was hooked. I recently moved from Arizona to Germany, and, while I do speak German and came with my husband (who is German), I still can relate to a lot of your experiences. Hope you’re having a good time!

  5. It is so weird to sit in NY with sunshine and dry streets and see you have the weather we should be having! Make a snowball and toss it for me.

  6. I’m so jealous — I live in Reno, Nevada (at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains), and we’ve had ONE snowstorm in the past three months. One inch. No lie.

Enjoy the snow — and please please PLEASE send some our way!

    🙂

  7. I love snow . . . when I don’t have to shovel it 😉 I, for one, am glad to have a warm winter.

  8. I miss snow oh so much. Thanks for making me more homesick more than I already am.

  9. No snow here either. V worrying cos wonder when it’s coming, how late and for how long. Nor has there been excess rain. Hmm. Needed round here for those of us on spring water supplies. Oops.
Lovely photos. The one with the leaning trees is my favourite. Thanks for sharing your snow. 🙂

  10. Amazing pictures! I know in southern California (where I am currently sitting in shorts and a t-shirt) we have no right to talk about snow, but honestly I wouldn’t mind if our mountains had a little dusting. Oh how I love to play in the snow…

  11. The second photo is magical.

I never had the good fortune to live at a place where it snows.

    How lucky you are.

    Nice shots.

  12. Awesome post! I want to follow your blog, but I can’t find a link on your page! No about you page either? 😦

  13. If you want snow a majority of the year, come to Alaska, we’ve had snow since October. It’s not bad until the temps drop below -10, that’s when your teeth start shatteing.
By the way, Congrats on Freshly Pressed!

  14. Oh man, it’s absolutely beautiful. I’m in Jersey and we’ve only gotten snow once this winter, I believe. I love when Hub and I have nowhere to go and we curl up and play video games and drink hot chocolate all day while it snows all day. The Pup hates it though! He won’t go near it!
Anyway, great post and congrats on being Freshly Pressed!

  15. Beautiful photos–absolutely lovely! Now if we could just get some of that snow over in New England…

  16. We have no snow – instead all of my Spring flowers have been blooming since December. Mother nature is all turned around!
I LOVE your photos and your blog!

  17. This is so cute, great pictures 🙂

  18. love the second picture. it looks quiet.

  19. Love the pics. I didn’t know that Seattle didn’t get much snow. For some reason I thought that it got plenty of rain and snow. Enjoy the weekend!

  20. Absolutely beautiful!

  21. Razel Rull-Navarro

    Beautiful photos!

  22. Oh I love this! It’s funny how we appreciate things so much more when they happen rarely! Beautiful pics! Especially the one with the bright red Beatle under the fluffy, white snow!

  23. These are beautiful photos! I was there in Seattle during the snow apocalypse! It’s funny because I’m from Utah and snow is such a big deal there and to me, it’s nothing over here. I’m jealous that you guys had a snow day though!

  24. Ok…I misread your text. The pictures are in Holland. haha I feel lame now. 😦

  25. Great photos! I love seeing snow photos but I cannot stand being in snow.. canadian winters are harsh! 😦

  26. Great photos and congratulations on being freshly pressed.

  27. I posted some amazing videos of a Seattle snow storm not too long ago. With all your hills and everyone’s inexperience with driving in it, I am glad you got back safely!!
    Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!

  28. Great pictures 🙂 I woke up this morning with beautiful white scenery, I was so happy…until I had to go outside and leave the warmth of my home…why, oh why does it have to be so cold in the winter!

  29. Oh man, I hate snow. Snow and strong winds are the worst kind of weather to me. Thanks for sharing. Connie

  30. Still waiting in Boston for this!! It would be nice to see alil, havent had much at all this year

  31. Love the photos! We haven’t had much snow here this year – which is extremely odd for Minnesota. I swore I’d never pine for another snowfall after last winter’s snowmaggedon – but your post today made me almost miss it a bit.

  32. the country is called the Netherlands. There is no such thing as Holland!

  33. Haddock's Homes

Where I live we VERY rarely see snow and it has been since 1985 or sometime around then that I can even remember seeing snow where i am. Austin, Texas does not see anything so beautiful. Love your pictures of the snow.

  34. Great post! I grew up in an area that consistently touched records for snowfall year afer year. Then I moved to TN and the idea of snow became a foreign concept. When the odd flurry falls here in Nashville, the entire city goes into a state of code-red panic. I miss sensible drivers and record-breaking snowfall. Enjoy the flakes!

  35. Great post! Am I right in thinking the photos were taken in Oud Zuid? I happened upon your blog via Freshly Pressed…love your photos! And taste in viewing material (I’m hooked on re-runs of Modern Family and Shameless..).

  36. Oh, i’m in Atlanta and this made me so jealous! I love your 24 before 25 list, but (as a MOM) do hope you’ll reconsider the tattoo. … but by all means, do everything else! Lovely VW shot … very reminiscent of my first car in Denver!

  37. Your photos are quite wonderful! And I happen to be quite jealous that you, too, got snow when Minnesota has naked grass patches all over the place.

  38. Love the pics, and Twin Peaks. We had 5cm of snow fall in Toronto Monday night, which melted in 5 hours or so on Tuesday. What a weird winter indeed.

  39. Looks great! I’m in Chicago… and still no snow! It’s been 40’s and 50’s for the past week or 2… strange weather…

  40. Haha, we have had snow for a LONG time! I am in Michigan.

  41. yea here in chicago it snows like hell, but this year not that much 😀
by the way, love the pictures.

  42. Glad to send our Seattle snow over to Holland 🙂

  43. I just finished posting about how I would like the snow to go away and then I read this and feel a bit guilty! But really I do like snow, it can be very enchanting. However, winters here in Saskatchewan last far too long. The snow becomes the enemy!
P.S.- The pictures are lovely! ^-^

  44. Hiya! Great pictures! Really miss snow! don’t get very much down here in São Paulo!

  45. I love the second shot above. LOVE!

  46. Very nice shots! I love the second one, seems almost like an etching. Congrats

  47. Lovely photos and so glad you got to enjoy the snow! Holland must be an amazing place and it’s on my Bucket List. By the way, did you know that part of the Twin Peaks Cafe, a.k.a Twede’s Cafe, had a fire in 2000? They rebuilt and still serve cherry pie with a damn fine cup o’ coffee, thankfully. 🙂

Yes, we in Seattle did have Snowmegeddon and it was fabulous, until the winds hit. You can check out my photos from around the area here: http://katemadison365.wordpress.com/2012/01/19/

Looking forward to reading more of your posts and congrats on Freshly Pressed!

  48. I love snow and I LOVE cherry limeade slushes from Sonic. Congrats on freshly pressed.

  49. It’s so pretty. I love a dusting of snow.

  50. I feel the same way. Living in California I don’t see snow often. I have to go out and find it. So, when I do experience it, it is truly magical.

  51. gorgeous pictures! enjoy the snow!

  52. Great blog. Especially love the work you put into your sidebar.

  53. I ❤ snow and winter! We haven't had much snow here either. Normally KC has some by now, but we've only been getting dustings. 😦

  54. Love your photos. So…atmospheric! Curios—what kind of camera do you use and how did you get such a nostalgic look?

  55. Beautiful photos! I’m in Portland so I’m especially jealous of Seattle’s snow.

And WOO Twin Peaks. Dale Cooper is one of the greatest fictional characters, is he not? 😉

  56. I was glad to finally have snow in my area of the globe. However, now that I’ve photographed it, I’d like it to go away until Christmas.

  57. Ed Voyles Hyundai

    beautiful photos thanks for sharing

  58. Denver CO is making up for all the places that don’t have snow! Thankfully, I didn’t have to be anywhere today, and could enjoy it fireside. Love the photos – makes me miss Europe…!

  59. Glad you got some snow. I felt that way too before we got it up here in the NW.

  60. youve done it. totally made me homesick. being from northern germany, life in southern california with all its perfect weather can be tough at times when you just wanna hear the snow creak underneath your feet. or the feel of your hands tingling when theyre just warming back up after a snowball fight. *sigh* it doesnt help that the pictures from holland look a lot like home, too. 😉 they are beautifully simplistic though.

  61. I Love your snowy self portrait at the end..

  62. That’s a great shot looking up through the avenue of trees; it’s has a surreal effect to it.

Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed! For the record, Miley Cyrus is on my list of enemies too, ever since she tried to cover “Smells Like Teen Spirit”.

  63. Correction: “it has”, not “it’s has”.

  64. Interesting. up here we generally try to flee from it…Just back from one month in lovely New Zealand and now…16 degrees C below zero. Now I wish we had snow, but there is nothing this year…Lovely photos!

  65. Wow ! Snow looks amazing….we’ve had nothing but wind and rain here in Scotland….well apart from last week when it was cold and sunny…but we’re back to bleak ! Roll onthe better weather.

  66. Great photos. We are usually cursing the snow in Toronto, but this year has been magical. Thanks for sharing your delightful experience.

    Congrats on being FP!

  68. Really great photos, snow is brilliant until it turns to ice and I fall over all the time!

  69. We’re are having a rare snowless winter here in New England so far (other than the three feet of snow we got on Halloween) and I couldnt be happier, especially after last winter with its three months of endless back to back to back to back blizzards. Its been so nice not to have to carve my car out of a glacier to go to work in the morning.

  70. We are due snow in the UK ….. Brilliant shots, especially of the car, and love your snuggly final picture , brrrrrrrr! Time to batten down the hatches and take your lead! Jen@madeinminch

  71. Very beautiful! It snowed in Virginia a couple of days ago! I got some great photos on my WordPress photography blog! 🙂

  72. Certainly no snow here in Qatar! . . . I used to love the first snowfall of the winter season when we lived in the Washington, DC area, though. Thank you for stirring up those magical feelings!

    http://arabianmusings.wordpress.com/

  73. The photo with the slant trees is really captivating. great post.

  74. We moved to Nebraska recently and are experiencing our first big snow. It is lovely, but I haven’t ventured outside yet!

  75. I was also so happy finally seeing the snow fall down from the sky here in Belgium. After the cold there’s finally some reward!!

  76. Lovely pictures! We just had our first snow of the year about an hour ago…. I expect that transport throughout London will grind to a halt at the sight of snowflakes, as it always does. But it’s lovely to see snow. So peaceful.

  77. Uff, I don’t like the snow at all. At the moment it’s -15C/5F and lots of snow. I guess I should move to another country. Sweden isn’t optimal for a snow hater. =/

  78. Wow, stunning photographs! Every time I take pictures of snow, the darn things always turn out looking blurry. I’m from Canada but overseas at the moment and I miss the white stuff so much! So, thanks for sharing.

  79. Beautiful! I love snow, it just started here today! x

  80. Love your photos and your writing … I’m from Seattle originally and I know how special snow is there. No “about” page on your blog? Nice post, I’ll be back…..

  81. felt I was there – in the snow – great post and stunning images – especially the red car….
    Best wishes
    Charmaine

  82. Sounds like a great weekend! Love snow & Twin Peaks!

  83. I am so jealous! Here in New York City, we have had snow exactly twice – once on Halloween, and once in January. So while most of New York sits around watching the skies, hoping desperately for the white stuff to fall, I find myself searching websites for tickets to Seattle.

Beyond my jealousy – good taste in watching Twin Peaks! That show rocks!

  84. nice post!!

  85. I’m so envious! I see post on FB of snow pouring in Holland and I should be there at this time and I’m not! Nice post! 🙂

  86. Beautiful photographs! Europe is enjoying a rather chilly February. The temperatures in Holland have plummeted to -22 (the coldest in 27 years). Luckily for where I am it has ‘only’ gone down to -13. Brrrrr. I had to dig out my winter woolies.

  87. thecoastallivingmom

So beautiful! Makes me miss living in Philly!

  88. You sound like an awesome gal Kendall – cute too – but I HATE snow!

  89. Hi Kendal – it snowed here in UK yesterday, but this morning it’s all gone! Can recommend Ballet – if you are in UK checkout Rambert Dance. Not sure why you’d want a tattoo? I don’t understand why they are now so popular?

  90. Great post ! What a lovely winter sunday ! 🙂 After reading this post I even enjoy it more !

  91. We have more than enough snow, here in Nova Scotia. You’d be welcome to come and take some of ours!

  92. It’s the first time it’s snowed where I live in England so me and my friends have been outside all day!

  93. We just got our first big snow of the year in Denver. Including a city wide snow day on Friday! You took your pictures far away from me, but they are very close to what I experienced here.

  94. Snow is very beautiful! I hope I can see one someday.

  95. Love the composition of the red car in the new snow!

  96. Hi! I’m in Italy and finally snow also in my town Pesaro… It’s very incredible! Good lucky, bye bye

  97. Hello from a fellow NWer in Holland! I’m from the Portland area and have lived in the Netherlands for awhile now. I was happy we finally got snow this winter, since I was jealous that Seattle and Portland beat us to it. Enjoy! and I love your photos. =)

  98. Nice photos! The UK has just received its first flurries of snow also, and there were scores of snow figures around today…Even made my own 🙂

  99. We’ve been missing snow all winter here in the American Midwest. Spring coming soon–I’m going to feel ripped-off my Mother Nature if I don’t get at least one snow day off work this year.

  100. Great pics. Had flake bits yesterday in Warrington

  101. I love your photos? I love snow and Im so jealous. Unfortunately here the snow is a very rare phenomena. Enjoy every snow flake!

  102. Not much snow here in the upper Midwest but with Feb/Mar upon us, I am sure there is some in our future. Those photos are gorgeous! There are so many being “assaulted” by snow and cold and do not have the mechanism in place to deal with either. Enjoy! Doreen

  103. We finally got some snow in Tenterden, Kent today – it is my most favourite type of weather!

  104. Amazing pictures. Each of these is such a great wallpaper for my ipad !

  105. Finally snow here too!

  106. so wish i had some snow where i was! I love how you captured the light fluffy simplicity of snow in all of your shots, but I have to say the one with the red car is my favorite

  107. What lovely pictures! I just wrote a blog last month about people who act like they do not like snow when everyone feels the magic of snow when it comes. Congrats on FP!!! AmberLena

  108. theveryhungrybookworm

I am so jealous of you! I wish we had snow where I am 😦

  109. Cold! 🙂 Beautiful, though!

  110. Finally, snow!!

It too snowed here in London and was magical. I took the opportunity to visit a cemetery to take some photos (yours are very good by the way) do stop by to have a look: http://coolyourjetsiv.wordpress.com/2012/02/05/camberwell-new-cemetery-london/

  111. thanks a lot for writing such a nice post

  112. Great pics, especially that red car – a fantastic juxtaposition of colours. We got a little bit of snow here in London too – the birds left such cute “foot” prints on the white canvas of our garden lawn.

  113. Great photos. No snow here in Ireland… yet! BTW we drive on the left here so you can visit the Guinness factory and then go for a drive!

  114. Wow. Wonderful, I miss snow, my son has never seen snow and my daughter hasn’t seen it since she was 7. I may have make a special trip just for my son…..

  115. such a lovely photos. love it ^^

  116. I remember making snow cream(milk and snow and sugar) back in the day…Now, I opt to cuddle up with hot chocolate and a book. Nice post you have captured via word and pics-

  119. Reblogged this on Colby is Mega and commented:
I love Seattle! Here in Sacramento, CA we never get snow! Thank you for these awesome pictures!

  120. Lovely pictures. Snow is even rarer where I live in Australia, but I enjoyed my first white Christmas in Europe two years ago.

  121. very big snow, and the view is very beautiful

  122. Great pics, we are also covered in snow;)

  123. I love the way you have described your love with Ice. Brilliant!

  124. Great pics and blog! That must have been some heavy snow! Luckily we haven’t had the snow we had in the past few years. It was getting awfully swampy during the spring!
